Catherine “CiCi” Bellis, the youngest player who won a main draw match at the U.S. Open in 1996, lost to 48th ranked Zarina Diyas on Thursday night.
Losing the Limelight
The fans of the American phenomenon chanted, “Let’s go CiCi.” She smiled at the crowd who consistently cheered her. However, Bellis, who wears a good luck charm during the tournament, lost to Diyas 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
Bellis tried to storm back. She fought off two match points before she went down. It started to unravel early in the third set when she double-faulted to give Diyas a 3-1 lead. She lost her temper and slammed her racquet.
Meanwhile, the coaches of Bellis assured that it would not be her last. They noted that she has a bright future.
How Bellis got Famous
The 15-year-old from tennis player is not accepting prize money from the tournament she joined to maintain her amateur status.
Bellis became popular after she ranked 1,208th in the world and won over a top 15 opponent.
