President of the Olympic Council, Sheik Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, said the allegations of corruption surrounding Qatar’s World Cup bid are based on racism. The Kuwaiti official spoke against the negative claims reported recently.
String of Allegations
Recent reports had alleged former Qatari FIFA executive Mohamed bin Hammam gave monetary rewards to football officials to support Qatar’s bid. Many claimed bribery happened when the Gulf state successful bagged the hosting rights. Leaked documents and conversation snippets surfaced just recently which fuelled the corruption allegations.
Sheik Ahmad, a member of the international Olympic committee, however, said that the allegations is driven by “racist actions toward Qatar and Arabs,” and insisted Qatar rightfully won the rights. He continued, “we will not let anyone take this tournament from us and we will hold it in this region.”
Ahmad is considered to be an influential figure in international sports. He currently leads the Association of National Olympic Committees.
